Appalachian State 62, Texas State 49
SAN MARCOS, Texas - A dominating defensive performance by Appalachian State University women's basketball (8-7, 2-2 SBC) led to a 62-49 triumph over Texas State (8-8, 3-1 SBC) on Saturday afternoon at the Strahan Center.
After surrendering a season-high 99 points against UTA, the Mountaineers' defense stymied Texas State into a season-low 49 points and 30.5 percent shooting from the floor. It's the lowest scoring total at home for TXST in 27 games since the 2016-17 season against UTA when it scored 39 points.
The 49 points given up is also the fewest allowed this season and the first time allowing under 50 points since holding Georgia Southern to 48 in a 25-point win during the 2016-17 season.
Louisiana 59, Georgia Southern 48
LAFAYETTE – In what was a strong defensive effort, led by freshman guard Brandi Williams tying a career-high with 25 points, Louisiana Women's Basketball (4-11, 2-2 SBC) won its second straight Sun Belt Conference game, taking down the Georgia Southern Eagles (5-10, 0-4 SBC), 59-48, Saturday afternoon at the CAJUNDOME to finish the weekend 2-0 in conference play.
Williams, who scored 10 points first quarter, tied a career-high with a game-high 25 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field to lead Louisiana offensively, while freshman guard Andrea Cournoyer scored 14 points to give Louisiana two scorers in double-figures. On the glass, sophomore center Ty'Reona Docuet grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Skyler Goodwin snagged five boards of her own.
Troy 87, Arkansas State 79
TROY, Alabama – For the second straight game, Troy erased a double-digit deficit and won on its home floor as the Trojans dispatched Arkansas State, 87-79, in Trojan Arena Saturday.
Arkansas State (8-7, 3-1 SBC) along with Troy (13-2, 4-0) entered the game as one of three teams tied for the Sun Belt lead. When the dust settled on Saturday's action, only Troy remained as undefeated in league play. The win stretched the team's winning streak to seven games.
Troy's 13-2 start matches the 1991-92 squad for the best in program history.
Little Rock 65, South Alabama 42
MOBILE, Ala. – Three Trojans would finish in double figures to pick up an important conference victory over South Alabama 65-42, with Kyra Collier dropping a game-high 20 points.
Defense would be the highlight of the game for Little Rock, holding the Jaguars to just 35 percent from the floor (14-40) while forcing 26 turnovers. The Trojans were also very efficient from the free throw line, shooting 83.3 percent (15-18).
UTA 79, Coastal Carolina 53
ARLINGTON, Texas – Four players scored in double figures as the UTA women's basketball team forced 23 turnovers and held Coastal Carolina to just 32.1 percent (18-of-56) shooting on the day, en route to a huge 79-53 win on Saturday afternoon at College Park Center.
With the win, UTA improves to 11-4 overall (3-1 SBC), while Coastal Carolina falls to 8-7 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.
Georgia State 56, ULM 41
MONROE, La. - After being tied at halftime, Georgia State compiled an 18-0 run in the third quarter to pull away from ULM and win 56-41 Saturday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Allison Johnson's 15 points led Georgia State and Madison Ervin matched her season-high with 12 points, nine of which came in the second quarter.
Walnatia Wright contributed in the paint with nine points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. The Panthers out-rebounded the Warhawks 34-27.
