NEW ORLEANS – The 2019 regular season closed with the Sun Belt Conference volleyball postseason honors unveiled on Tuesday.
Coastal Carolina took home three of the top individual honors as sophomore outside hitter Anett Nemeth grabbed Player and Offensive Player of the Year honors and freshman setter Brigitta Petrenko garnered Freshman of the Year honors. Texas State received two individual honors, sophomore setter Emily DeWalt (Setter of the Year) and head coach Karen Chisum (Coach of the Year), while UTA redshirt junior libero Madelyn St. Germain was voted Defensive Player of the Year and Louisiana junior defensive specialist/libero Hannah Ramirez was selected Newcomer of the Year.
Nemeth, DeWalt and Petrenko on the first team and St. Germain on the second team also received All-Sun Belt recognition.
Nemeth is having one of the best seasons for Coastal Carolina in school history. So far during this season, she is among the NCAA Division I leaders in points per set (7th, 5.66), kills per set (8th, 4.86) and total kills (15th, 471). The six-time Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week reached the 30-kill mark four times, including a school-record 33 kills at Troy on Nov. 3. Nemeth sports a .364 hitting percentage with 129 more kills in 14 fewer sets played than the conference leader.
St. Germain leads the Sun Belt in digs per set (4.96) and sits second in total digs (501). She recorded her 1,000th career dig in UTA's 3-2 win at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 27. In conference matches, St. Germain led the league in digs per set (5.50) and total digs (330). She racked up the second-most digs in a match this season with 37 digs at Louisiana on Nov. 1.
DeWalt, the 2018 Sun Belt Setter and Freshman of the Year, earned top honors as the conference's best setter for the second-straight year after posting another impressive season for the Bobcats. She ranks third in the conference in assists per set (10.25) and tied for 28th nationally in total assists (1,086). The 11-time Sun Belt weekly award winner has 11 double-doubles to her credit this season.
Petrenko is making a major impact for the Chanticleers in her first year, ranking among the nation's best servers for most of the regular season. She ranks fourth in Division I in service aces per set (0.40) and is a big reason behind Coastal Carolina ranking second nationally in service aces per set (2.50). Petrenko ranks second in the conference in assists per set (10.70) and total assists (1,156). She collected a school single-match record 68 assists at Towson on Sept. 13.
Ramirez has shored up the libero position in her first season at Louisiana after transferring from Panola College. Consistency was her hallmark throughout the regular season, averaging 4.58 digs per set in all matches and 4.60 digs per set in conference matches to rank in the top five in both categories. Ramirez has scooped double digits in digs in all but three of the Ragin' Cajuns 28 matches. She totaled 15-plus digs on 15 occasions, reaching the 20-dig mark nine times.
Chisum directed Texas State to its second-straight Sun Belt regular-season title and third-straight West Division title. Her Bobcats turned in 13 sweeps this season, including nine in conference matches. With the victory over Northwestern State on Sept. 13, she became the seventh coach in Division I volleyball to reach 900 wins. Chisum, in her 40th season leading the Bobcats, is the fifth coach across all NCAA levels to reach 900 wins with just one program.
Texas State led in All-Sun Belt selections with four, including a pair of Bobcats on the first team.
