2019 Sun Belt Women's Soccer All-Conference Honors Announced

FOLEY, Ala. – The Sun Belt Conference announced the 2019 Women’s Soccer All-Conference teams and individual award winners on Tuesday afternoon. The selections were made in a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches.

South Alabama senior, Briana Morris, was named Sun Belt Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate, Justice Stanford, a senior goalkeeper, was tabbed as the league's Defensive Player of the Year.

South Alabama’s Gracie Wilson, a midfielder, was named Freshman of the Year and her teammate, Athanasia Moraitou, a senior midfielder, was named the league's Newcomer of the Year. USA’s Richard Moodie was chosen as the Sun Belt Coach of the Year.

Morris led the league in goals scored with six in conference play while also leading the league in points with 13. She started nine of the Jaguars’ 10 conference matches. The senior forward had four game-winning goals and was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week three times in 2019. Morris’ 14 total goals this season ranks in the top 20 in the NCAA.

Stanford started 17 of 18 matches in goal for the Jaguars. She had 26 saves and allowed only four goals in league play and stopped an additional 23 in non-conference action. In conference play, the senior ranks third amongst keepers with a 0.867 save percentage and led the league in shutouts with seven. Stanford logged more than 1,600 minutes in goal this season.

South Alabama’s Wilson made an immediate impact for the Jaguars this season. The Conyers, Ga., native ranks third in points (11) and is tied for third in goals (4) and assists (3) during league play. Wilson becomes the sixth Jaguar in the last seven years to be named Freshman of the Year.

Moraitou came to South Alabama as a graduate student transfer. She played in 15 of the Jaguars’ 18 matches and tallied six assists and one goal.

USA’s Moodie led his Jaguars to an 8-1-1 league mark in 2019 and the program’s fifth regular season title in the last six seasons. Moodie’s Jags are currently riding a five-match unbeaten streak, having not lost since Oct. 4. During conference play, the Jaguars finished second in the league with 18 goals in 10 matches and tallied 16 assists. USA also tied for the league-low with only four goals allowed during conference play and led the league with eight shutouts in 10 conference matches.

In addition to the individual awards, the Sun Belt awarded the All-Sun Belt First and Second teams. Top-seeded USA placed nine individuals on the All-Sun Belt teams, five on the First Team and four on the Second Team. Second-seeded Troy had four between the First and Second Teams.
