FOLEY, Ala. - It took more than 110 minutes of soccer between seventh-seeded Little Rock and 10th-seeded Louisiana on Monday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex before the Trojans advanced 3-0 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie.
Little Rock (7-7-5) made all three of its penalty kicks – shots by Abril Lucio, Bergros Asgeirsdottir and Fanney Einarsdottir – and its goalkeeper Saskia Wagner came up huge, stopping all three attempts by the Ragin’ Cajuns.
The Trojans move on to play second-seeded South Alabama on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
There was no scoring in the match until the 77th minute when Lucio registered her third goal of the season. Louisiana junior forward Karleen Bedre notched her sixth goal of the year in the 85th minute when she converted a penalty kick.
Little Rock has a penchant for winning in penalty kicks at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, as this was the Trojans fifth PK situation at the league tournament since 2017.
Both teams finished with 18 shots apiece in the match, while Louisiana (6-10-3) held an 8-7 advantage on shots on goal.
Wagner came up with seven saves for the Trojans, while the Ragin’ Cajuns’ Lauryn Starwood recorded six saves.
