Coastal Carolina Wins 2021 Sun Belt Women's Golf Championship

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Coastal Carolina claimed the second Sun Belt women’s golf championship in program history with a 36-hole total of 14-under par 562.

The Chanticleers were declared the victors at the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Golf Championship when the LPGA International Hills Course was deemed unplayable following three days of nearly-constant rain and over a four-hour lightning delay Tuesday.

Despite the way the tournament ended, Coastal Carolina head coach Katie Quinney was proud of her team’s performance throughout the championship, stating, “We actually had a really solid round on day one, so we weren’t discouraged. We knew we needed more time on the golf course—and luckily we got it and they went out and did what I knew they could do. They just had an incredible second round and we needed all of it. We did not want the tournament to end this way, but we’re happy to be on top.”

Coastal Carolina sophomore Sophia Carlsen posted back-to-back under-par efforts on the par-72, 6,193-yard course to earn individual medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 7-under par 137.

Coastal Carolina freshman Nicole Abelar (-5, 139), South Alabama junior Julie Hovland (-4, 140), Texas State sophomore Noramol Nuchsila (-4, 140), Texas State graduate student Sasikarn Somboonsup (-3, 141), Troy sophomore ShaeLee Scarberry (-2, 142), Texas State senior Geraldine Wong (-2, 142) and Coastal Carolina junior Tiffany Arafi (-2, 142) joined Carlsen on the All-Tournament Team.

Texas State finished as the championship runner-up with a 36-hole score of six-under par 570, while Georgia Southern (+13, 589), South Alabama (+21, 597), Troy (+22, 598), Arkansas State (+23, 599), Little Rock (+27, 603), ULM (+28, 604), App State (+29, 605), Georgia State (+32, 608) and UTA (+46, 622) rounded out the conference championship field.
