NEW ORLEANS – Following Top 8 finishes to open their spring seasons, Georgia Southern’s Ben Carr and Arkansas State’s Olivia Schmidt received their second Sun Belt Golfer of the Week honors of the 2021-22 campaign.
Men’s Golfer of the Week
Ben Carr, Georgia Southern
(Sr. – Columbus, Ga.)
Senior Ben Carr carded a 3-under par 207 (74-67-66—207) to tie for eighth in the 78-golfer field at the 45th annual VyStar Gators Invitational. The Columbus, Ga., native battled back from a 4-over par 74 in the opening round to earn his fifth Top 8 finish in as many events this season. Carr, the reigning Sun Belt championship individual medalist, owns a 68.60 scoring average through 15 rounds during his senior season. He helped the Eagles to a fourth-place finish, the best finish for a Georgia Southern squad at the Gators Invitational since the 1979-80 team won the prestigious event.
Women’s Golfer of the Week
Olivia Schmidt, Arkansas State
(Jr. – Edmond, Okla.)
Junior Olivia Schmidt has opened the spring season with six-straight under-par rounds, going a combined 15-under par with a 69.50 scoring average. At the FAU Paradise Invitational, Schmidt shot 7-under par 209 (70-69-70—209) to finish tied for seventh in the 78-golfer field. The Edmond, Okla., native’s total was the second-lowest 54-hole score in Red Wolves program history. At the First Coast Classic, Schmidt carded an 8-under par 208 (68-69-71—208) to tie her career-low and the program record—en route to her first career individual medalist honor, topping a 62-golfer field.
