NEW ORLEANS — Little Rock senior Anton Albers was named the Sun Belt Golfer of the Year to headline the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golf Postseason Awards and All-Conference Teams announced Tuesday. The honors were voted upon by the conference’s 12 head coaches.
Louisiana freshman Eli Ortego was named the Freshman of the Year, South Alabama senior Jack Hearn was selected as the Newcomer of the Year and Little Rock head coach Jake Harrington was honored as the Coach of the Year.
Albers compiled a 70.70 scoring average across 27 rounds on the season. The Buchholz, Germany, native averaged .96 strokes under par while posting eight Top 10 finishes in nine tournament appearances. He was the individual medalist at the Little Rock Invitational and the runner-up at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate and during stroke play at the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship.
Ortego accumulated a 72.97 scoring average through 35 rounds during his freshman campaign. The Lafayette, La., product averaged .97 strokes over par and had six Top 20 finishes in 12 tournaments during the 2021-22 season.
Hearn, a transfer from McNeese, posted a 72.37 scoring average through 30 rounds. The Carrick-on-Suir, Tipperary, Ireland, native average .47 strokes over par and tallied four Top 20 finishes in 10 tournaments this season—including individual medalist honors at the Craft Farms Intercollegiate.
Harrington guided Little Rock to a 287.83 scoring average—1.03 strokes over par—and three tournament victories during the 2021-22 campaign. The Trojans tied Georgia Southern for the top spot at the conclusion of stroke play at the 2022 Sun Belt Men’s Golf Championship with a 54-hole score of 25-over par 889 and earned a pair of match play victories en route to this year’s Sun Belt title—the third in program history and first in the match play era.
Little Rock joined Georgia Southern as the only Sun Belt programs to produce three All-Sun Belt golfers, including a pair of First Team honorees from each program.
Arkansas State (2), Louisiana (2), South Alabama (2), UTA (2) and Troy (2) also had multiple All-Sun Belt selections. 9-of-12 Sun Belt programs were represented among the three All-Sun Belt teams.
