NEW ORLEANS – The Troy men’s golf team and Texas State’s Sakke Siltala punched their tickets to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojans have appeared in four NCAA Regionals but make the National Championship for the first time in program history.
Troy danced around the cut line on Wednesday before the entire lineup played the par-5 sixth hole to perfection, shooting birdie or better to move back into fifth place.
Jake Springer led the way for the Trojans finishing in a tie for fifth at 6-under par in the tournament. He was supported by Brantley Scott who tied for eighth at 5-under par.
Lee Poppell was even through 54 holes and Pablo Garcia rounded out the team card at 10-over par. Through three rounds the Trojans went 283-284-283 (850).
Texas State’s Siltala opened play at the Amherst Regional with a round of 1-over par 71 on the first day to sit tied for 27th before a pair of 3-under 67 rounds to secure his spot as the top finishing individual and advance to the National Championship.
Siltala is the first Sun Belt golfer to play in the National Championship since Georgia Southern’s Steven Fisk did so in 2019.
The Trojans will be one of 30 teams while Siltala will be one of six individuals at the NCAA National Championship held May 23-28 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
