NEW ORLEANS - Benjamin Fernandez of Southern Miss has been named Sun Belt men’s golfer of the month for February.

The junior opened the spring season with a 12-under par performance at the Hal Williams Collegiate, finishing third overall as an individual. Fernandez opened with a 3-under par round one followed by a 4-under round two. He finished the tournament by shooting a career best 5-under (65). He led Southern Miss to a second-place finishing behind No. 13 Illinois.
 
At the Dorado Beach Collegiate Fernandez helped Southern Miss to a second-place finish with a 4-under par performance, leading the Golden Eagles. The junior shot two rounds even par before closing out the tournament with a 68 (-4) to finish third as an individual.
 
Fernandez posted a 68.33 scoring average across the two tournaments.
 
Fernandez led Southern Miss in back-to-back second-place finishes, the first behind No. 13 Illinois at the Hal Williams Collegiate and then behind Stetson at the Dorado Beach Collegiate, leading both events in birdies with 18 and 16 respectively.
