FOLEY, Ala. – Michaela Mikko entered the match and secured two saves as No. 3 seed Georgia Southern won its first match since 2012 via penalties to advance to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Semifinals as they defeated No. 6 seed ULM.
The Eagles (12-5-1) advance to the semifinal match on, November 3 at 4 p.m. CST at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala. They will face the winner of No. 2 seed Old Dominion and No. 7 seed Georgia State. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
ULM (9-2-8) took an early 1-0 lead as a cross from Kobler was headed off the cross bar by Holmes. Konst found the loose ball to secure her tenth goal of the year and put the Warhawks ahead 1-0. At the half, ULM held a 12-6 advantage in shots over Georgia Southern.
The pace of the second half slowed tremendously as just seven shots were taken. The Eagles managed three shots in the second 45 minutes, however a clearance from keeper Quinn Wilson found the feet of Bri Conley, who leveled the score at 1-1 in the 80
th minute.
Neither team scored in either of the overtime periods to provide the tournament’s first penalty kick shootout. The Warhawks stepped to the line first as new goalie Mikko provided a save. Elis Nemstov connected to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 as Libby Holmes for the Warhawks quickly made it level 1-1.
A miss from the Eagles opened the door as both teams made their next penalties to tie at 2-2 through three kicks. Another Save from Mikko gave the Eagles an opportunity. Ansleigh Crenshaw made a successful penalty as Maya Zovko provided the game-winner to send Georgia Southern to the semifinals for the fourth time in the program’s history.
