Crucial Clashes Coat Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Season’s Penultimate Matches

NEW ORLEANS – As Sun Belt Conference women’s soccer teams prepare for their second-to-last regular season matches, the chase for a title and positioning in the 2025 Sun Belt Championship bracket kicks into high gear around the league on Friday, October 24.

The slate features two East Division, two West Division and three cross-divisional matchups, as all seven matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.

WILD, WILD WEST
A pivotal West Division matchup between host South Alabama (9-3-2, 5-1-2 SBC, 17 points) and Texas State (8-2-5, 5-0-3, 18 points) is on the docket in Mobile, Ala., and could determine who wins the division. Three teams remain in the hunt to win the division, including ULM (10-2-3, 5-0-3 SBC, 18 points), and while ULM and Texas State have 11 division points each, South Alabama has 10 points and is the only team with two division matches remaining on its schedule. The Jaguars and Bobcats played to a scoreless draw in San Marcos, Texas last season, as the Jags went on to win the division by one point.

EAST PUZZLE PIECE
Major East Division implications are at stake when Georgia State (9-5-2, 5-2-1 SBC, 16 points) hosts James Madison (7-4-5, 3-2-3 SBC, 12 points) in Atlanta. James Madison owns eight division points – one ahead of Georgia State – in what will be the final East Division match of the season for the Dukes. However, the Panthers have two division matches remaining, including a showdown at Old Dominion in the season finale on Oct. 29. A James Madison victory over Georgia State would put the Dukes in first place in the division, and only an Old Dominion victory over Georgia State could unseat the Dukes from the top spot. Meanwhile, the Panthers control their own destiny in the division race, as wins over the Dukes and Monarchs assure them of the division crown. Georgia State also wins the East with one win and one draw in its final two matches, plus a Marshall loss or draw against Coastal Carolina on Friday.

MUST-WIN SITUATIONS
Coastal Carolina (3-4-7, 0-1-7 SBC, 7 points) and App State (5-7-3, 1-4-3 SBC, 6 points) face must-win scenarios Friday evening for a chance to keep their Sun Belt Championship hopes alive. Trailing three teams tied for sixth place in the conference standings, the Chanticleers play on the road against one of the teams they’re chasing, Marshall (7-4-3, 3-2-3 SBC, 12 points), while the Mountaineers travel to Southern Miss (2-12-1, 1-7-0 SBC, 3 points). Additionally for App State, wins or draws by all three of Marshall, James Madison and Louisiana would eliminate them from contention for a Sun Belt tournament bid.

BURGEONING BLAISE
ULM (10-2-3, 5-0-3 SBC) senior forward Skylar Blaise leads the conference in goals scored (11) and is tied for the league lead in points (25) and game-winning goals (4) this season. A two-time Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week in 2025, Blaise has scored five goals and at least one in four-straight matches while accumulating `12 points during that span. Additionally, she ranks first among all players in goals (7) and points (17) against Sun Belt opponents, while holding the No. 2 spot in shots (31) and shots on goal (16) in conference play

UNBEATEN STREAKS
ULM increased its league-leading undefeated streak to 11 with a 3-0 home win over Troy on Oct. 19. Texas State owns the second-longest active unbeaten streak at eight-consecutive matches. Coastal Carolina is next with a conference record six-consecutive draws, followed by Georgia State (3-0-1) and South Alabama (2-0-2) going undefeated in their last four outings. Combining non-conference play and having already completed its 2025 home slate, ULM is the only Sun Belt team to go unbeaten on its home pitch this season with a 7-0-2 mark.

HOME COMFORT
Texas State owns the longest active unbeaten streak at home against Sun Belt opponents at 15-consecutive matches. The Bobcats own a 10-0-5 record against league opponents in San Marcos going back to late in the 2022 season, while Old Dominion holds the second-longest streak at 12-straight with a 7-0-5 mark going back to the 2023 campaign. Georgia State (5-0-2) and South Alabama (5-0-2) are next on the list at seven in a row.

DRAWS HISTORY
Through 56 total Sun Belt matches played this season and with 14 remaining, 20 league contests have ended in draws which ranks as the second most in a season in conference history and just two behind the standard of 22 set in 2024. Coastal Carolina eclipsed the Sun Belt record for draws in conference play with seven in its first eight matches this season. In 2022, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel eliminated overtime for regular season matches tied after 90 minutes.
