NEW ORLEANS – Five matches into the Sun Belt Conference women’s soccer league slate, all 14 teams begin the second half of the schedule on Sunday, October 5. The docket includes three East Division and three West Division matches, as well as one cross-division contest. All seven matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
BOBCATS & CAJUNS
Leading the Sun Belt with four wins and 13 points in the conference standings, Texas State (7-2-3, 4-0-1 SBC) returns home to host an emerging Louisiana (5-4-3, 2-1-2) team in a key West Division matchup. The Bobcats are coming off a 1-0 road win at Arkansas State on Thursday and have not lost a league match at home in 13-consecutive instances dating back to the end of the 2022 campaign. Having outscored Sun Belt opponents, 6-2, while remaining unbeaten, Texas State’s two goals allowed are the fewest of any team in the league. Meanwhile, the Ragin’ Cajuns enter Sunday undefeated in their four-straight matches while earning two wins and a pair of draws and outscoring opponents, 8-2. Louisiana is coming off a 5-0 home win over Southern Miss on Thursday where five different players scored a goal and is one of just six Sun Belt teams with a conference road win this season which came in a 1-0 triumph at App State on Sept. 21.
ODU OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
After scoring nine goals in its first six matches of the season and just two in its first three Sun Belt games, Old Dominion’s (7-1-3, 3-0-2 SBC) offense has exploded with 12 goals in its last two outings which includes a 7-1 win at Southern Miss (9/28) followed by a 5-3 home win over Troy (10/2). Eight different Monarchs have been responsible for the dozen goals scored, as freshman forward Ashley Economopoulos has three of them, while graduate midfielder Gry Boe Thrysoe and senior forward Yuliia Khrystiuk have two apiece. Nine different ODU players have recorded at least one assist during the last two matches, while junior midfielder Riley Mullen leads the team with four. Old Dominion travels to Marshall (6-4-1, 2-2-1 SBC) for an East Division battle Sunday evening.
SOUMARE SURGING
Reigning Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week and Texas State senior forward Mady Soumare has registered at least one point in each match during the Bobcats’ four-match winning streak. Soumare has compiled eight points on three goals and two assists during the span, and all three of her goals have been game-winners in matches decided by one goal, including a 1-0 win at Georgia Southern (9/18), a 2-1 win over Georgia State (9/27) and a 1-0 victory at Arkansas State (10/2). Additionally, her assist at Troy (9/21) contributed to the Bobcats’ only goal in the 1-0 triumph.
LAST OF THE UNBEATENS
Through five Sun Belt matches, just three teams remain unbeaten: Texas State, Old Dominion and ULM (2-0-3). Extending beyond conference play, ULM increased its undefeated streak to a league-leading eight-consecutive outings dating back to a 2-1 win over Little Rock on Aug. 27. Old Dominion owns the second-longest active unbeaten streak at seven in a row with five wins and two draws dating back to a Sept. 4 win over then-20th-ranked Virginia Tech.
GOAL GETTERS
Only three Sun Belt teams – Texas State, Georgia State and Marshall – have scored at least one goal in all five of their conference matches this season. Among those teams, Georgia State and Marshall lead the way with 10 goals through five league contests, while Texas State has six scores. Overall, Old Dominion leads the way with 14 goals against Sun Belt foes, followed by South Alabama with 13.
HOME COMFORT
Texas State owns the longest active unbeaten streak at home against Sun Belt opponents at 13-consecutive matches. The Bobcats own a 9-0-4 record against league opponents in San Marcos going back to late in the 2022 season, while Old Dominion holds the second-longest streak at 12-straight with a 7-0-5 mark going back to the 2023 campaign. James Madison is next on the list, undefeated in its last nine league matches at home (8-0-1), followed by Georgia State (4-0-1) and South Alabama (4-0-1) at five in a row.
