Top Four Seeds Advance to Semifinals at 2025 Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Championship

FOLEY, Ala. – The top four seeds advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer Championship on Monday at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.

Two matches ended in full time as No. 2 seed Old Dominion rolled past No. 7 Georgia State, 4-0, after No. 3 seed ULM held on to defeat No. 6 seed Marshall, 1-0. No. 1 seed South Alabama upended No. 8 seed Louisiana in penalty kicks after a scoreless draw, while No. 4 seed Texas State outlasted No. 5 seed and reigning champion James Madison in a shootout follow a 1-1 draw.

(3) ULM 1, (6) Marshall 0 (Box Score)
ULM (12-2-4) executed the difference-maker midway through the 23rd minute when Ines De Lope Casanova sent a pass up the far sideline from just inside midfield to Ava Goodman who received the ball in stride and made one move beyond a final defender before touching a shot into the left side of the net from seven yards out.

The Warhawks held onto the lead in the second despite late pressure by Marshall inside the final 20 minutes to reach their first semifinal since 2021. Marshall (8-5-4) outshot ULM, 10-7, overall and 6-5 in the second half while earning a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks in the contest.

ULM also extended its unbeaten streak to 14 in a row with the victory.

(2) Old Dominion 4, (7) Georgia State 0 (Box Score)
Old Dominion (11-2-4) scored a pair of goals in each half of the match to earn a spot in the tournament’s semifinals for the fourth year in a row. The Monarchs scored early in the 15th minute on a corner kick by Yuliia Khrystiuk that was mishandled by the goalkeeper and crossed the goal line.

Old Dominion used precision passing inside the final four minutes before halftime to generate it second goal when Riley Mullen ran a straight line from the near sideline to the top of the 18-yard box before delivering a pass to Brooke Edwards. Edwards turned and made a gentle touch to a charging Gry Boe Thrysoe who delivered a perfect shot into the upper right corner to extend the advantage to 2-0.

The Monarchs tallied their third goal early in the 52nd minute when Koto Davis turned a header into a transition opportunity. Davis headed a pass ahead to Edwards who spun around her mark and sprinted ahead before beating the goalkeeper with a shot into the right corner.

ODU added one more score on a mishandled ball and failed corral by the Georgia State (9-8-2) goalkeeper with under four minutes left for the final score, 4-0.

Old Dominion outshot Georgia State, 16-6, while owning a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.

(1) South Alabama 0, (8) Louisiana 0 (Box Score)
The two sides battled through a scoreless first half that saw both teams produce four shots apiece, while the Ragin’ Cajuns owned a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal in the period. Louisiana (7-6-5) produced a flurry of attacking opportunities early in the second half, including four in the first five minutes, but South Alabama (10-3-4) was able to escape the pressure and prevent any damage.

A red card was issued to Louisiana goalkeeper Natalie Mayes late in the 60th minute when she jumped on a loose ball just beyond the 18-yard line in front of a South Alabama attacker for a hand ball outside the box. Traditionally a defender, team captain Aila Swinton took over between the pipes from that point, as the Ragin’ Cajuns were forced to play down one player.

Despite scoring opportunities from both sides down the stretch and in each of the two 10-minute overtime periods, Swinton made five saves from the remainder of the second half to help send the match to penalty kicks.

Louisiana grabbed a 3-1 advantage after each side took three penalty-kick attempts following back-to-back South Alabama misses. However, the Ragin’ Cajuns would have three-consecutive attempts denied by the Jaguars who responded with three-straight conversions of their own to complete the comeback and advance.

(4) Texas State 1, (5) James Madison 1 (Box Score)
Texas State (8-3-7) took advantage of an attack in the 33rd minute when Constance Agyemang touched a loose ball to the wing for Helen Alormenu. Alormenu settled and then sent a pass into the box that found the toe of Victoria Meza who reached out with her right leg and tipped a one-hopper with her toe past the oncoming James Madison goalkeeper to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

James Madison (9-4-6) went on the attack early and often in the second half with an array of shot attempts that couldn’t find nylon. That changed in the 73rd minute when Jamie Swartz sent a ball up the near sideline to Jordan Yang who took three touches on a run before delivering a cross into the goal box that was redirected off the head by Audrey Orrock and into the back of the net to level the score, 1-1.

Two overtimes were not enough to decide a winner, as the match advanced to penalty kicks. Both sides made their first four attempts in the shootout before Texas State goalkeeper Maude Rouanet made a diving save to her left on James Madison’s fifth attempt. The Bobcats punched their ticket to the semifinals on their next try when Agyemang found the back of the net.

The Dukes owned a 24-12 shooting advantage across 110 minutes and a 7-2 lead in corner kicks. Rouanet made eight saves in the contest for the Bobcats.
