PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The rainy weather did not dampen the competitive spirit on display for the quarterfinal matches at the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Championship. The top four seeds scored opening-day wins to set up Saturday's semifinal matchups at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
 
No. 2 South Alabama and No. 3 Coastal Carolina are set to clash in one semifinal, while No. 1 Georgia State and No. 4 UTA are meeting in the other. Live coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+ with Matt Stewart and Ken Thomas on the call.
 
Heavy rains in the area forced all four quarterfinal matches indoors. That did not squelch the championship atmosphere as spectators packed the six covered courts for more than nine hours of tennis action.
 
Coastal Carolina and No. 6 Georgia Southern dueled in an afternoon affair that saw the Chanticleers escape with a 4-3 victory. The match's momentum went with back and forth until the Eagles took a 3-2 lead. The advantage swung back in Coastal Carolina's favor one final time, thanks to back-to-back, straight-set singles wins from junior Gonzalo Achondo at No. 5 and sophomore Daiki Tanabe at No. 6, to clinch the win.
 
South Alabama posted the first sweep of the day with a 4-0 victory over No. 7 Troy. After clinching the doubles point, the Jaguars went 1-2-3 in singles victories from senior Sacha Modica and juniors Loic Cloes and Clement Marzol. A minute after Modica clinched at No. 1, Cloes closed at No. 2 with a 6-2, 7-5 win. Marzol clinched the match at No. 3 with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory.
 
Georgia State also made quick work of No. 8 Appalachian State, finishing off the Mountaineers in exactly two hours in a 4-0 triumph. The Panthers were in a tough battle in doubles before securing the point in a tiebreaker. Georgia State pounced on Appalachian State in singles with three straight-set wins. Freshman Roberts Grinvalds clinched the match for the Panthers at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
 
The day's final matchup to finish provided another thriller as UTA defeated No. 4 Louisiana 4-2. The Mavericks grabbed the doubles point and the first singles win by senior Mauricio Rio at No. 3 to take the early lead. A pair of singles wins at the Nos. 2 and 6 spots sandwiching UTA's second singles victory got the Ragin' Cajuns back into the match. Attention then turned to the top singles court where senior Enrique Pardo fought to a gutsy 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-3 win to secure the match for UTA.
