NEW ORLEANS – The second week of Sun Belt volleyball action will feature 14 divisional matches. Seven teams enter the week on active win streaks as five teams look to claim a double digit win total. 13 of the 14 matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- BIG WINS – Sun Belt programs accumulated seven wins over autonomy four opponents in the regular season with Arkansas State notching the lone ranked win over then No. 16 Missouri at home. The Red Wolves split the series with Tigers winning the opener 3-2, before falling 3-2 the next day. App State and Old Dominion joined Arkansas State with autonomy victories in the final weekend of regular season play, as the Red Wolves went on the road and defeated in-state opponent Arkansas 3-1. App State and Old Dominion defeated a pair of ACC opponents with the Mountaineers claiming victory over Duke and the Monarchs handing NC State its second loss to a Sun Belt program.
- NATIONAL STAGE – Several Sun Belt student-athletes enter league play ranked amongst the very best in the sport across various statistical categories. James Madison’s Kennedy Louisell continues to lead the country in total kills at 273 and points at 295.0. She ranks fourth in kills per set at 5.15 and seventh in points per set at 5.57. Georgia Southern’s Kirsten Barrett ranks 18th in aces per set at .56 and is 19th in assists per set at 10.24 to pace the league. Coastal Carolina’s Anna Rita ranks eighth in blocks per set at 1.58 and is sixth in total blocks at 79. ULM’s Morgan Howard ranks sixth nationally in service aces with 33. The league features two of the best defensive specialists in the nation as Georgia State’s Marta Lazzarin and Georgia Southern’s Maddie Cugino rank inside the top ten in digs per set. Lazzarin ranks third at 5.60 as Cugino sits at nineth at 5.24.
- OFFENSIVE POWER – The league has continued to separate itself offensively, as numerous teams rank in various offensive categories. James Madison ranks 11th nationally in assists per set at 13.30 and 29th in hitting percentage at .271. The Dukes also are nineth in kills per set at 14.30 and are joined by Southern Miss (28, 13.88) and Georgia Southern (46, 13.60) inside the top 50.
- EXTRA STOUT – Coastal Carolina’s Jalyn Stout continues her storied career after the NCAA Record Book this season. The junior setter has broken the single season NCAA Division I triple-doubles record in each of her first two seasons. During her freshman campaign, she recorded 14 to become the new single season record holder. Stout added to the record during her sophomore season with 20 to extend her career mark and become the all-time NCAA Division I triple-double’s leader at 34. This season, she has recorded seven additional triple-doubles and broke the NCAA record across all divisions for career triple-doubles with 41. Recently, she was the only non-autonomy student-athlete to be a mid-year addition to the AVCA Player of the Year Watchlist. Stout was one of 17 additions that joined the 30 player list that was released in the preseason.
- RPI RANKINGS – Five Sun Belt programs rank inside the top 100 of the first RPI poll that was released earlier in the week, as the league ranks seventh overall in conference RPI. Arkansas State leads the way at 42 with App State joining them inside the top 50 at 46. Coastal Carolina (81) and Texas State (84) each used impressive non-conference resumes to build their resume with Georgia State (97) rounding out the final grouping. Five additional teams fit inside the top 150 in Southern Miss (124), James Madison (129), South Alabama (130), Georgia Southern (133) and Louisiana (147).
