ROME, Ga. – In a rematch of last year’s title match, No. 56 nationally ranked Old Dominion claimed its third consecutive Sun Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Championship crown with a 4-2 victory over Georgia Southern at the Rome Tennis Center.
Old Dominion improved to 17-8 on the year with the victory. Georgia Southern finishes the season with an 18-7 mark, after advancing to the championship match for the second time in program history.
No. 56 nationally ranked and top-seeded Old Dominion used the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. The pair of First Team All-Conference doubles teams won for the third consecutive day by a 6-3 scoreline on courts one and two to earn the early point.
First Team All-Conference Connor van Schalkwyk from Old Dominion won the first singles match on court two 6-2, 6-2. Aryan Saleh finished shortly after his fellow Monarch on court six by a 6-1, 6-1 margin to put Old Dominion ahead 3-0.
Georgia Southern responded on court three as Sun Belt Men’s Tennis Elite Award Winner Pol del Castillo won the tiebreaker in the second set to win 6-4, 7-6. Fellow Eagle Pierre Mouesca tallied a win on court four in three sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
Freshman JK Olivier de Sarden secured the title on court five by a 7-6, 7-5 scoreline.
Old Dominion earns the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament selection show is slated for Monday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
